Clinical Study on Psychiatric Patients in a Emergency Room

Abstract
Among the patients received by the emergency room of Kyung Hee Univ. Hospital during the period from Oct. 11th, 1971 to Jul. 31st, 1975, 345 patients who were notified to the Neuro-Psychiatric department and were considered as psychiatric emergency cases by a psychiatric resident or a psychiatric staff, were studied by way of review of their charts and the following results were obtained.
1) The rate of the patients consulted to Neuro-Psychiatric department was 2% of all patients received by the E. R. during the same period.
2) Neuroses was 48.5%, convulsive disorder 17.4%, and schizophrenia 14.0% of total emergency cases referred to psychiatric department.
3) 62.5% of all the admissions of hysterical neuroses and 74.2% of all the admissons of convulsive disorders were received at the E. R.
4) Patients received by the E. R. were of lower socio-economic status compared to those admitted via Neuro-Psychiatric O.P.D.
5) Mean duration of Hospitalization of the patients admitted via E. R. was shorter and the rate of
discharge against medical advice was higher in the patients compared to those admitted via 0. P. D.
6) Outcome of treatment was poorer in schizophrenics admitted via E. R. than those admitted via a 0. P. D.
7) Rate of referral of the suicidal attempts from E. R. was very low.
